We all know that regular automotive maintenance is important for long-term performance, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. Between the daily grind and family life, it can be tough to stay on top of your maintenance routine—but not when you’re driving an Acura.
That’s because all of Acura’s current models are equipped with a handy feature designed to track required maintenance tasks and provide timely reminders that’ll keep your car or SUV in tip-top shape. The Acura Maintenance Minder system doesn’t just track raw mileage; it crunches up-to-the-minute data to provide a bespoke maintenance schedule that’s built around your daily driving habits.
What is the Maintenance Minder? How does it work? And how can it help you get the most out of your Acura? Read on as we dive into the details and learn how Acura is simplifying the maintenance process with the Maintenance Minder.
What Is the Acura Maintenance Minder?
The Acura Maintenance Minder system represents a high-tech evolution of automotive tech. While keeping abreast of regular automotive maintenance tasks was once dictated by a relatively simple schedule printed right in the owner’s manual, this approach required drivers to keep an exhaustive ledger of oil changes, tire rotations, and belt replacements. It also wasn't necessarily accurate since it didn't account for different driving styles and environments.
The Maintenance Minder system takes all of the guesswork out of the process while offering a precise service schedule. Older maintenance schedules were based solely on mileage, which, while helpful, left a lot to be desired in terms of accuracy. Acura’s system takes a more comprehensive approach, constantly monitoring various systems throughout your vehicle, leveraging real-time data and using a proprietary algorithm to predict when you’re due for your next oil change or spark plug replacement.
These recommendations are communicated through alphabetic and numeric codes that ensure accuracy while preventing drivers from wasting their hard-earned cash on maintenance tasks that might not be required. From engine operating conditions to average speed, ambient temperatures, and more, the Maintenance Minder bases its recommendations on the way you drive, not some universal guidelines drafted by an engineer in a sterile lab setting.
Maintenance Minder Codes vs Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Before we get into Acura maintenance codes and how they work, there’s an important clarification that needs to be made. When most drivers talk about vehicle-related codes, they’re usually discussing what are known as Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
If you’ve ever had the dreaded “Check Engine” light pop on, you’re already familiar with the DTC system. These DTC codes, which are generated by a vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system, are essential when it comes to identifying malfunctions related to the engine, transmission, chassis, and various components.
A DTC can be interpreted using an OBD-II reader, which will translate the generic Check Engine light to a specific five-character code that consists of a letter followed by four numbers. These specific codes vary by manufacturer, but some common examples include P0171 (lean fuel), P0420 (catalyst efficiency), or P0300 (random misfire).
These codes are distinct from the Acura Maintenance Minder system, which is designed to alert drivers to a scheduled maintenance task before it can graduate into a full-blown DTC. That’s really the primary difference between the two codes: while the Maintenance Minder codes are routine and preventative, DTCs only pop up once something has actually gone wrong.

Maintenance Minder Codes Explained
We’ll start with the Maintenance Minder’s main codes, which are easy as "A" and "B" (no "C" required). If your Acura’s digital gauge cluster displays the message "Maintenance Due Soon” or “Service Due Soon” followed by the letter "A" or "B", that means it’s time for the most basic of all maintenance tasks: an oil change. However, there are some differences.
Main Code "A"
While the Maintenance Minder’s other main code and sub-codes can indicate a number of different possible issues, Acura has wisely reserved Main Code "A" solely for the all-important oil change. There are few ways to keep your vehicle in better working order than regular oil changes, which lubricate crucial parts, prevent costly wear and tear, and promote peak efficiency.
While the exact oil change interval depends on your specific vehicle and driving habits, Acura generally recommends performing the project every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. That might be a much longer interval than you’re accustomed to, but it all comes down to advancements in automotive engineering. Acura vehicles employ synthetic oil that offers a much longer lifespan than conventional oil and is made to better withstand the inevitable deterioration that comes with driving.
Main Code "B"
Then we have Main Code "B". This code also indicates that it’s time for an oil change. However, it means it is also time to replace the oil filter along with engine oil, while Main Code "A" implies that no filter change is required.
Main Code "B" can also be followed by a numerical Sub-Code. This can point to at least a half-dozen maintenance tasks that include everything from checking the air filters to replacing the transmission fluid.
Numeric Sub-Codes
In order to translate the Maintenance Minder alert into an actionable maintenance task, you need to reference the accompanying Sub-Code. These numerical codes, which range from 1 to 7, help drivers zero in on the right component or system. Sub-Code 1, for instance, would indicate that it’s time to rotate your tires, so if your dashboard displays something along the lines of “B1”, it means that you’ll need to schedule an oil and filter change along with a tire rotation.
While some Sub-Codes are reserved for a single maintenance task, others cover a number of different projects. For instance, while Sub-Code 5 tells you to replace the engine coolant, Sub-Code 4 covers the spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, and valve clearance. Your Acura owner’s manual should provide a full list of relevant codes, but generally speaking, the Sub-Codes can be broken down as follows:
- Code 1: Rotate tires
- Code 2: Replace engine and cabin air filters, inspect drive belt
- Code 3: Replace transmission fluid
- Code 4: Replace spark plugs, replace timing belt, inspect water pump, inspect valve clearance
- Code 5: Replace engine coolant
- Code 6: Replace rear differential fluid
- Code 7: Replace brake fluid
Oil Life Display
The Maintenance Minder service codes provide drivers with a wealth of information, but they’re not the only way to keep tabs on your Acura’s health. All Acura models are also equipped with an Oil Life Display that allows owners to track the longevity of their lubrication. Simply navigate to the maintenance menu, and you’ll be able to view your vehicle’s remaining oil life.
When your oil life percentage falls below a certain point, your vehicle will display a Maintenance Minder message to let you know that it is time to schedule an oil change at our service center. At around 15% oil life remaining, the message will read “Maintenance Due Soon,” while hitting 5% will trigger a more urgent “Maintenance Due Now” message.
If you fail to heed the warning and the Oil Life Display ticks all the way down to 0%, the message will switch to “Maintenance Past Due”. At this point, you’re risking the long-term health of one of your Acura’s most crucial components, and should schedule an appointment with our service center as soon as possible.
A little heads-up can go a long way towards simplifying your oil change routine, and even saving you a little money. The Oil Life Display gives you plenty of time to plan for your next oil change, allowing you to take advantage of service specials and avoid any unexpected pit stops during an extended road trip.
