It also wasn't necessarily accurate since it didn't account for different driving styles and environments.
The Maintenance Minder system takes all of the guesswork out of the process while offering a precise service schedule. Older maintenance schedules were based solely on mileage, which, while helpful, left a lot to be desired in terms of accuracy. Acura’s system takes a more comprehensive approach, constantly monitoring various systems throughout your vehicle, leveraging real-time data and using a proprietary algorithm to predict when you’re due for your next oil change or spark plug replacement.
These recommendations are communicated through alphabetic and numeric codes that ensure accuracy while preventing drivers from wasting their hard-earned cash on maintenance tasks that might not be required. From engine operating conditions to average speed, ambient temperatures, and more, the Maintenance Minder bases its recommendations on the way you drive, not some universal guidelines drafted by an engineer in a sterile lab setting.
Maintenance Minder Codes vs Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Before we get into Acura maintenance codes and how they work, there’s an important clarification that needs to be made. When most drivers talk about vehicle-related codes, they’re usually discussing what are known as Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
If you’ve ever had the dreaded “Check Engine” light pop on, you’re already familiar with the DTC system. While the exact oil change interval depends on your specific vehicle and driving habits, Acura generally recommends performing the project every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Acura vehicles employ synthetic oil that offers a much longer lifespan than conventional oil and is made to better withstand the inevitable deterioration that comes with driving.
Main Code "B"
Then we have Main Code "B". This code also indicates that it’s time for an oil change. However, it means it is also time to replace the oil filter along with engine oil, while Main Code "A" implies that no filter change is required.
Main Code "B" can also be followed by a numerical Sub-Code. This can point to at least a half-dozen maintenance tasks that include everything from checking the air filters to replacing the transmission fluid.
Numeric Sub-Codes
In order to translate the Maintenance Minder alert into an actionable maintenance task, you need to reference the accompanying Sub-Code. These numerical codes, which range from 1 to 7, help drivers zero in on the right component or system. Sub-Code 1, for instance, would indicate that it’s time to rotate your tires, so if your dashboard displays something along the lines of “B1”, it means that you’ll need to schedule an oil and filter change along with a tire rotation.
While some Sub-Codes are reserved for a single maintenance task, others cover a number of different projects. For instance, while Sub-Code 5 tells you to replace the engine coolant, Sub-Code 4 covers the spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, and valve clearance. Your Acura owner’s manual should provide a full list of relevant codes, but generally speaking, the Sub-Codes can be broken down as follows:
- Code 1: Rotate tires
- Code 2: Replace engine and cabin air filters, inspect drive belt

At around 15% oil life remaining, the message will read “Maintenance Due Soon,” while hitting 5% will trigger a more urgent “Maintenance Due Now” message.
If you fail to heed the warning and the Oil Life Display ticks all the way down to 0%, the message will switch to “Maintenance Past Due”.
